Quick Answer

A paycheck calculator estimates take-home pay per check: gross salary minus income tax, mandatory employee payroll contributions and your pre-tax retirement or insurance deductions, divided by the number of pay periods. For example, a US employee on $100,000 paid bi-weekly with a 6% 401(k) and a 5% state rate takes home about $2,685 per check after $11,850 federal tax, $4,700 state tax and $7,650 FICA, while a UK salary of £50,000 nets about £3,293 a month. Rules follow your selected currency (FICA, National Insurance, CPP/EI, CPF or Japan's ≈15% social insurance), and results are estimates, not official withholding tables.

How This Calculation Works

  • Values calculate dynamically in real-time as you enter figures or adjust sliders.
  • The equation on the right is exactly what the calculator runs — check any result by hand.
Core Equation
Deductions = Salary × Deduction % Income Tax = country tax on (Salary − Deductions) — see the Tax Calculator for brackets Contributions (employee share, on gross salary): US: Social Security 6.2% up to $184,500 + Medicare 1.45% (+0.9% above $200,000) UK: 8% of earnings £12,570–£50,270 + 2% above Canada: CPP 5.95% of ($3,500–$74,600) + CPP2 4% of ($74,600–$85,000) + EI 1.63% up to $68,900 Singapore: CPF 20% of wages up to $8,000/month (age ≤55) Japan: ≈15% social insurance (approximate) Net per Paycheck = (Salary − Income Tax − Contributions − Deductions) / Pay Periods

Specific Instructions:

Select your currency in the site header to choose the country. Enter your annual gross salary, pay frequency (weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly or monthly), an optional state or provincial rate (US and Canada only) and your retirement/insurance deduction percentage. Deductions are treated as pre-tax for income tax. The result shows gross pay, income tax, payroll contributions, deductions and net pay per check, plus net annual take-home.

Paycheck Calculator Formula

The Paycheck Calculator uses the following formula, calculated in your browser as you change the inputs:

Worked Example: Paycheck Calculator

US: $100,000 salary, bi-weekly (26), 6% 401(k), 5% state rate: 401(k) = $6,000 → federal taxable = $94,000 − $16,100 = $77,900 → federal tax $11,850 State = 5% × $94,000 = $4,700 | FICA = 7.65% × $100,000 = $7,650 Net = $100,000 − $11,850 − $4,700 − $7,650 − $6,000 = $69,800 → ≈ $2,685 per paycheck UK: £50,000 salary, monthly: Income tax = 20% × (£50,000 − £12,570) = £7,486 | NI = 8% × £37,430 = £2,994 Net = £39,520 a year → ≈ £3,293 per month

Frequently Asked Questions — Paycheck Calculator

What is the difference between gross pay and net pay?

Gross pay is your total earnings before any deductions — the figure in your contract. Net pay, or take-home pay, is what reaches your bank account after income tax, payroll contributions such as FICA, National Insurance, CPP/EI or CPF, and any retirement or insurance deductions. For example, a UK salary of £50,000 is about £4,167 gross a month, but after £7,486 of income tax and £2,994 of National Insurance a year, net pay is about £3,293.

How does the calculator know which country's payroll rules to use?

It follows the currency selected in the site header: USD = United States, GBP = United Kingdom, CAD = Canada, AUD = Australia, INR = India, SGD = Singapore, JPY = Japan and AED = UAE. Each result names the rule set and tax year it applied, such as 'UK 2026/27'. EUR shows a note instead, because income tax and payroll contributions differ across Eurozone countries. Switch the currency to see the same salary under another country's rules.

Why is Japan's social insurance shown as an approximation?

Japanese health, pension and employment insurance premiums depend on your prefecture, health-insurance society, age and standard monthly remuneration band, and pension premiums are capped at higher salaries. The calculator uses a flat 15% of salary as a labelled approximation with no caps. On a ¥6,000,000 salary that is ¥900,000 a year, or ¥75,000 a month; your actual payslip will differ, and high earners will usually pay less than 15%.

What is pre-tax vs post-tax deduction?

Pre-tax deductions (like 401(k), pension or salary-sacrifice contributions) reduce the income that tax is calculated on. Post-tax deductions come out after tax and do not reduce your tax bill. This calculator treats the deduction percentage as pre-tax for income tax, but payroll contributions are still charged on gross salary.
